Wassermusik Suite No.2
Warnow Version with 5 trombones
2016
Composition for the honorable reception of a river flowing into the Sea. In collaboration with the composer Matthias Kranebitter.
The starting point of this collaboration was the idea of paying special tribute to a river upon its arrival in the sea. At the mouth into the sea it has grown to maximum size and at the same time ends, dissolves and merges into something else.
On this occasion, a brass band plays a composition written especially for the river. Through its use at funerals and processions to state receptions, the brass band is emblematic of Western traditions. Here it plays for the river, "humanizing" it and thus making it more tangible. The humorous gesture allows us to relate more easily to the river, to nature, playfully avoiding theatricality and heaviness.
The musical composition, however, neither depicts the river nor is it a simple homage; rather, the work is retranslated into the logic of the river. On the one hand, the music-aesthetic qualities of flowing waters in their dependence on temperature, flow velocity, salinity, etc. are taken into account. are taken into account in the composition. Furthermore, the wind instruments are partly conducted directly into the water - the composition thus speaks directly the language of the river.
